Cage Force Tournament - Who is RYOTA?

Wednesday 6 February 2008

One of the contestants in the bantamweight tournament I knew absolutely nothing about... Except the name, RYOTA.

Today, I decided to do some research to try to find out a bit about the "mystery" contestant in the Cage Force Bantamweight tournament.

His Cage Force profile ( these facts:
-MMA Record 2-0-0 (1 KO (it's a TKO), and 1 submission)
-Kingdom grapple record 14-0-2 (12 submissions)
-2005 The Streetfighter Catch Wrestling champion
-2007 World catch wrestling runner up

His MMA fights are in DEEP:
-DEEP 16 vs. Takehiko Ueno - Won by TKO, punches from back mountposition Round 1, 1:44
-DEEP 24 vs. Tsuyoshi (or Takeshi) Yamasaki - Won by arm-bar, Round 1,2:03

Both these fights were on the under-card, and not listed on Sherdog (Ihave not found any English sources that have recorded these fights).

The DEEP web-site still has the DEEP 24 results up. What to expect from Ryota... A very strong grappler, he is a bit unknowngoing in and it will be interesting to see how he goes against the more experienced MMA guys. His weakness, (I would expect) of course on hisfeet.

Keep your eyes on this guy! Cage Force proved last year that theyare good at discovering talent. Hopefully that should clear some of the "mystery" surrounding this fighter.

I'll ask GCM about this. Why do Japanese fighters/organisations do this?

It's not uncommon to see fighters name's spelt in capitals. Is there any reason behind it? e.g.

WINDY Tomani

It's always something that has got me thinking

Its his nickname (of course you know that though). In this case probably his real first name...

Would guess that it has roots back to Sumo, where nearly 100% of the fighters go by made up names. A good question to ask though. Makes it more difficult to research, unless it is someone famous.
