4/29 M-1 Challenge 3rd Edition Japan - Results

Wednesday 29 April 2009

First off, apologies for not being able to stream the event, as I had promised. The reason, as I mentioned yesterday was the rights in a couple of countries. I was not able to set up a something to exclude those viewers from my site. I hope most fans have been able to view the event, if not it will be streaming at the M-1 site for 24 hours so the fans can watch it. On Monday 4th May they will also show the Aoki vs. Fedor fight on same site.

I was not able to see much of the event, but what I saw looked very good. A few of my friends were in the crowd and enjoyed the event. It was clear that there has been an increase in the popularity of these events.

The team from across the Pacific, USA Team West has made the headlines. Defeating the Koreans 5-0 is a very good performance.

4/29 M-1 Challenge - Press Conference Pictures

Tuesday 28 April 2009

Some bad news in front of the big event tomorrow, due to rights in some countries I wont be able to stream the event. I would have to block users in these locations and I am not a computer wiz, so I had to pass on this one. There will be streams available though.

You can try this site: M-1 Global
I have been told that there should be a stream there.

The stream should start (at the above mentioned sites) at these times:
Amsterdam: 9:00AM
St Petersburg : 11:00AM
Helsinki: 10:00AM
London: 8:00AM
Japan: 4:00PM

Anyway, here are some pictures from the press conference earlier today. There were lots of big names in attendance and this should be a very good event for the fans that are able to get tickets.

All pictures are courtesy of M-1 Global.

Pancrase have added 3 fights to their 3rd Changing Tour event. This is looking like it will be a very good card, Pancrase are putting some of their biggest stars on the card. This includes Sengoku champion Satoru Kitaoka and Sengoku veterans Ryo Kawamura and Yukiya Naito.

5/24 ZST 20 - Sydney Olympians Tag Team

2 Japanese Olympians from the Sydney games are are teaming up for a ZST tag team fight in ZST 20. ZST are really bringing out some of their most popular fighters for this tag-team fight.

The fight will see the Kazuyuki Miyata/Katsuhiko Nagata pairing take on ZST stars Masayuki Okude and Tetsuya Yamada. This should be a fight the fans will come to watch, and as it is in Differ Ariake this time there is room for more fans than what is normal at the ZST events. I am sure there will be a lot more fights added to this card.

ZST Lightweight Tag-Team:

4/25 The Zone FC - Results

Sunday 26 April 2009

The Zone FC put on a 13 fight card in Gothenburg, Sweden last night. Usually, as I write about fights in Japan, there are lots of decisions. On this card, none of the fights went the distance. Of course, there can be many reasons for that, but it usually means that the crowd is entertained.

Kim Don Hee (?) is out of her fight with the undefeated Megumi Fuji, the replacement is another Korean fighter. Chu Won Bun is a muay thai fighter with a muay thai record of 10-3. The 35 year old Korean is unlikely to be a threat to the undefeated Mega-Megu, but no opponent should be taken lightly.

4/25 Cage Force 10 - Results

Saturday 25 April 2009

Controversy at the Cage Force event in Differ Ariake today. The main event was cancelled due to Marcus Donahue (I am still not 100% sure of the name) coming in over weight. There was talk of Cage Force doing weigh-ins just before the event, I am not sure if that was the case here but Kuniyoshi Hironaka was announced the winner by disqualification.

What ended up being the main event saw DREAM veteran Motoki Miyazawa win an expected win over Hiroki Nagaoka by rear-naked choke.

Kuniyoshi Hironaka Def. Marcus Donahue by DQ (not making weight)

5/2 Sengoku 8 - Fight Order

WVR have announced the fight order for the 8th Sengoku event, this will be held in the Yoyogi 2nd Gymnasium on May 2.

To me the Sengoku card are looking better and better for every event. They have added a fight that I am really excited about as an opening event here too. Look out for the 2008 Pancrase Neo-Blood tournament winner, Hirotoshi Saito. From his record it might look like he is a boring fighter, but he is the opposite (look at his picture gallery). I am very happy to see him get a shot here against Paraestra Matsudo's Yoshitaka Abe.

The main event will the the big fight in the tournament, Hatsu Hioki will take on Ronnie Mann. After the 1st round Hioki is the Japanese favorite in this tournament, but he is taking on a very experienced opponent.

My personal favorite for the GP is Marlon Sandro, I think he will be very difficult to beat here, but he has not got an easy opponent. Two of the ubeaten fighters in the GP, Marlon Sandro and Nick Denis, will square off and it should be a battle. The way I see it, Denis has his chance early in this fight otherwise Sandro will grind out a win.

Main-Event - Featherweight GP 2nd Round:
11. Hatsu Hioki 18-3-2 vs. 17-1-1 Ronnie Mann
10. Michihiro Omigawa 5-7-1 vs. 15-5-0 Nam Phan

Non-Tournament:
9. Light: Kazunori Yokota vs. Leonardo Santos
8. Light-Heavy: Keiichiro Yamamiya vs. Xande Ribeiro

Featherweight GP 2nd Round:
7. Masanori Kanehara 12-5-5 vs. 3-0-0 Jung Chan Sung
6. Marlon Sandro 13-0-0 vs. 7-0-0 Nick Denis

Non-Tournament:
5. Welter: Makoto Takimoto vs. Michael Costa
4. Light-Heavy: Stanislav Nedkov 5-0-0 vs. 54-12-0 Travis Wiuff
3. Light: Maiximo Blanco 2-1-1 vs. 6-6-1 Akihiko Mouri

Opening Fight:
2. Feather: Shigeki Osawa 2-0-0 vs. 0-3-0 Kota Ishibashi
1. Feather: Hirotoshi Saito 2-1-1 vs. 2-2-1 Yoshitaka Abe

5/26 DREAM 9 - Kawajiri vs. J.Z.

DREAM 9 will be held in Yokohama Arena on May 26. The card was already looking very good, and now FEG has announced another big fight that has been rumored for a while.

JZ Clavan is one of the most popular lightweights out there, and he will return to the ring after more than a year off. Last year he had a controversial loss to Shinya Aoki in the 1st round in the lightweight GP, they needed 2 attempts to get a result.

Tatsuya Kawajiri reached the semi-final in the same GP, and only Eddie Alvarez was able to deny him a spot in the final in a FOTY candidate.

This is a fight between two of the top lightweights out there and a very good addition to an already stacked card.

Added:
Light: Gesias "JZ" Calvancante 14-2-1 vs. Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri

Previously Announced:Middleweight Title Fight:
Ronald "Jacare" Souza 10-2-0 vs. 22-6-0 Jason "Mayhem" Miller

Hideo Tokoro 21-16-1 vs. 14-2-0 Abel Cullum
Yoshiro Maeda 24-6-2 vs. 10-6-1 Hiroyuki Takaya

4/25 Cage Force 10 - Fight Order

Thursday 23 April 2009

GCM have announced the last few fights for their Cage Force 10 event in Differ Ariake April 25.

The main event will see the return of Kuniyoshi Hironaka to Cage Force, he is returning after fighting in the UFC and DREAM. It will be his first fight for GCM in over 3 years. He is taking on Team Alpha Male's Marcus Donahue (and I am not sure if I got the name right), I have not been able to find much information about him so help is appreciated.

Also on the card is one of Hironaka's DREAM opponents, Motoki Miyazawa. Miyazawa is a very talented fighter, and his only loss was to Hironaka in DREAM 5.

The fight between Shooto veteran Hiroshi Nakamura and Cage Force veteran Wataru Miki should be a very good fight.

Dont forget about the Valkyrie event earlier that same day, in the same venue.

Main-Event:
9. Light: Kuniyoshi Hironaka 12-6-0 vs. Marcus Donahue

8. Welter: Motoki Miyazawa 5-1-0 vs. 13-13-8 Hiroki Nagaoka

5/10 Shooto Final Tradition - T-Shirt

Shooto is putting on the best card I can remeber for their final "Tradition" event, and of course such an occation demands a t-shirt. The Shooto t-shirts always look good and this will be sold at the event for JPY 4,500.

The card has fighters such as Takanori Gomi, Mitsuhiro Ishida, Megumi Fuji, Mizuto Hirota, Koutetsu Boku and "Lion" Takeshi.

A reminder of the fights announced:

Lightweight Title Fight:
"Lion" Takeshi Inoue 15-3-0 vs. 24-13-2 Rumina Sato

4/29 M-1 Challenge Japan - FEDOR vs. AOKI!

It is true, 2 of the biggest stars in the MMA world will get in the ring at the upcoming M-1 event in Japan. It is only an exhibition fight though, so you probably wont get to see any KOs. The rules for this exhibition fight are still not set, I would guess it will not be MMA, still its going to be fun to watch.

The best part! I am planning to stream this live here. That means you wont have any excuses not to watch!

It is going to be a very good event, even without 2 of the best fighters getting in the ring to entertain the crowd.

Also note that Riki Fukuda's replacement is Yusuke Masuda (who must have lost some weight if it is correct).

4/25 Valkyrie 02 - Fight Order

Wednesday 22 April 2009

GCM have announced the fight order for the all female part of the afternoon on April 25 in Differ Ariake. That also means that there is unlikely to be additions to this card, and with only 5 fights on it I was hoping for a couple more.

But there are some good fights on, so if you are going to the Cage Force event later that same day, why not go to this one too? Roxanne Modafferi was presented as a participant early on, but she is not on the card.

On the card are some very good and experienced fighters. Some of the bigger names are: Yuka Tsuji, Emi Fujino, "Windy" Tomomi, Takayo Hashi and "Sachi".

The main event is the first Valkyrie title fight between former SmackGirl champion Yuka Tsuji and Kate Martinez. The co-main event will see another SmackGirl veteran, Takayo Hashi, take on new-comer Chisa Yonezawa.

Main-Event: Featherweight Title Fight:
6. Yuka Tsuji 21-1-0 vs. 1-0-0 Kate Martinez

5. Welter: Takayo Hashi 11-1-0 vs. 0-1-0 Chisa Yonezawa

7/13 K-1 World Max 2009 - Final 8

K-1 held their final 16 tournament yesterday, they have also announced how the winners will match up in the quarter finals, which are to be held in July.

The big stars did make it through, but the hometown favorite, Yoshihiro Sato, did not. The Japanese hopes are tied to the runner up in the Japan tournament, Yuya Yamamoto, who defeated Korean Chi Bin Lim to make it to the final 8.

The big fight in the final 8 should be the fight between Artur Kyshenko and Andy Souwer, but it is a tight tournament this year as well.

K-1 World Max 2009 - World Championship Tournament Final 8:
Drago vs. Yuya Yamamoto
Giorgo Petrosyan vs. Albert Kraus

4/25 The Zone FC ***UPDATE***

***UPDATE 3***
-Ivaylo Markov is out due to pneumonia, he will be replaced by Vladimir Kuchenko. He will take on Eddy Bengtson at late notice.
-Mark Lahjner has been forced to withdraw due to injury, he will be replaced by Mats Nilsson.
-The tickets are selling fast, ringside seats are sold out! If you have managed to get your tickets, dont miss the official party taking place at Berså starting at 22:30.

***UPDATE 2***
-The injury to Alexander Gustafsson's knee is confirmed to keep him out of action for several weeks. That means that his fight with Arunas Andriuskevicus will not happen. No word on finding a replacement.

-Elina Nilson, who was set to face Melissa Lan, has suffered an injury during practice and that fight has also been cancelled.

***UPDATE***
There has been some updates to this card, positive and negative...
-Elina Nilson is set to face Melissa Lan in the female fight of the night.
-Swedish fighter August Wallen is set to face Frenchman Karim Mammar.
-The BIG news: The main fight on this card is in jeopardy. Sherdog had it listed as one of the fights to watch out for in April. Alexander Gustafsson was set to face Arunas Andriuskevicus, but received a minor injury during training. He will undergo an arthroscopy early next week to determine whether he is fit to fight or not.
-As you can see by the comments, Ivaylo Markov has also had to pull out. Hopefully they will find a replacement.

Moving back to Norway does mean some changes, one of them being that I am going to try to stay on top of European MMA as well. The site will still be dedicated to Japanese MMA, but I think European events deserve more attention as well.

April 25 The Zone FC is holding an event in Gothenburg Sweden. If you are in the area, its in Lisebergshallen. Lots of talented fighters on the card and it should be fun night. Unfortuantely I wont be able to make it this time, but hopefully for the next one!

I do realize that Sherdog might not have the complete records for european fighters (something I have noticed before), but I am using their records.

Michael Böbner 2-1-0 vs. 2-3-0 Åke Bergvall
Jeppe Fausing vs. Anton Mattsson
Martin Svensson 2-0-0 vs. 3-1-0 Henning Svendsen

5/15 KSW Martial Arts Confrontation ***UPDATE***

***UPDATE***
A few of the fighter records were incorrect, they should now be corrected. Also added to the card is Mamed Khalidov, who is returning to KSW after a win in ShoXC in October 2008. His opponent is yet to be named.

*****

There are lots of organizations in Europe that put on great shows that I know very little about, KSW is one of them.

KSW has been holding events in Poland for 5 years, and they have held 11 events (14 if you count eliminations etc). KSWs events are a bit different than what I am used to, it actually takes us back to the early days with 1-day tournaments.

For the KSW tournaments to date, there have been 8 fighters at 95kg. For the 12th event there is a change, the tournament will be at 85kg and the final will take place in December.

In addition to the tournament there will be some "super-fights", and it should be an exciting day of fights for the Polish fans.

8-Man Tournament Participants:
Andre Reinders 11-7-2
Alexander Shlemenko 23-3-0
Aslanbek Saidov 3-0-0
Michael Verginelli 5-5-0
Vitor Nobrega 2-1-0
Artur Kadlubek 4-1-0
Lukasz Christ 2-2-0
TBA

Non-Tournament Fights:
Marcin Najman vs. 2-2-1 Jahmai Satisch
Antoni Chmielewski 18-4-0 vs. 4-3-0 Petr Ondrus
Maciej Gorski 6-2-0 vs. TBA
Mamed Khalidov 18-3-1 vs. TBA

5/10 Shooto Final Tradition - DREAM vs. Sengoku - Mitsuhiro Ishida Fighting!

Sunday 19 April 2009

The final card in the "Tradition" series, honoring Shooto's 20th anniversary, is lookeing like the best Shooto event I can remember...

Announced today was a fight that is promoted as Dream vs. Sengoku. Representing DREAM is Mitsuhiro Ishida, he is taking on Sengoku's Mizuto Hirota. But this is not the only big fight announced!

Also on the card is female star Megumi Fuji, who will be taking on Korean fighter and I am not sure of the name, Kim Don Hee.

Shooto veteran Kenichiro Togashi should have his hands full with Tetsuji Kato. The Strikeforce veteran is returning to Shooto after almost 2 years away from the ring, his last fight was a decision loss to Gilbert Melendez in September 2007. He has not fought in Shooto since 2003.

And the big fights dont stop there! The Pacific champion, Yusuke Endo, is going to take on the South American champion, "Chiqueirinho", in a fight that wont be for a title but will be an important fight to determine the #1 contender for Nakakura's title.

"Wicky" is also coming back to Shooto after fighting in both the Cage Force and DREAM tournaments. He is always a popular addition to these cards, and he should be the favorite in his fight with Takumi Ota. Coming off 2 straight losses, "Wicky" will want to end this early, and in the process improve his Shooto ranking.

Announced:
Welter: Mitsuhiro Ishida 18-4-1 vs. 10-3-1 Mizuto Hirota
Fly: Megumi Fuji 16-0-0 vs. Kim Don Hee (?)
Welter: Kenichiro Togashi 8-6-5 vs. 19-8-0 Tetsuji Kato

8/2 Sengoku 9 - Hidehiko Yoshida wants to Fight

During a "Viva Judo!" event in Saitama Japan, Hidehiko Yoshida has said that he is ready to return to the Sengoku ring.

Yoshida is holds is a very important man in the Sengoku promotion, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist has been in the Sengoku ring 3 times, twice in the main envent.

It is easy to forget that in his Judo career, he gold medal was at 78kg. 4 years later he came in 5th at 86kg. At "Sengoku No Ran 2009" he dropped in weight to fight at light-heavyweight. I thought he looked much better at this weight than previously at heavyweight and hope he continues at light-heavyweight.

He lost his fight at light-heavyweight to fellow judoka Sanae Kikuta, but he is not opposed a re-match, and I am sure it would draw the Japanese fans agian even if it is not likely to happen this year.

5/2 Sengoku 8 - Fights Announced

Saturday 18 April 2009

Sengoku have added another 2 fights to the card on May 2. Both the fights will include one of their "training players". This really proves the commitment Sengoku has to these fighters, and we will get to see more of them in the future.

Maximo Blanco had a very good wrestler and is very entertaining to watch. His record so far showes that he wins quick, or not at all. If he is able to overpower his oppoennt, he will. He is lacking submission skills though, but I am sure he is working on that too. In Sengoku 8 he will fight the much more experienced Akihiko Mouri.

The other Sengoku training player is Shigeki Osawa, also a wrestler. He has only had 2 fights, and will be in the opening fight in this event. He is taking on Kota Ishibashi.

The M-1 challenge last year was a very good event, but there were lots of last minute changes. I expect that this year too, and there has already been one. 5/2 Sengoku 8 - Fight Announced

Sunday 12 April 2009

Nightmare of Battle is writing that the YAMMA champion and Sengoku and UFC veteran Travis Wiuff will take on Bulgarian Stanislav Nedkov.

4/12 Shooto GIG Central Vol. 17 - RESULTS

Shooto had pulled out some of their Nagoya regulars to fight on this card, and in addition to the 5 fights on the main-card, there were 3 amature fights. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find the results for the amature fights, but here are the results for the other fights.

In the main event, Hiroshi Shiba was able to get Hattori's back and finish the fight with a rear-naked choke. Hattori showed that he was a dangerous fighter though, and Shiba left the fight with a bloody nose, it also meant a stop to Hattori's 3 fight winning streak.

Paolo Milano had gone winless for 3 fights, and finally got back on the winning streak, even if it was a very close decision.

Welter: Hiroshi Shiba Def. Kenichi Hattori by rear-naked choke Round 1 4:53

Welter: Paolo Milano Def. Takahiro Kajita by Decision 2-1
Middle: Takesuke Kume Def. Hirosumi Sugiura by Decision 2-0
Bantam: Joji Shimada Def. Hiroshi Sakamoto by rear-naked choke Round 1 3:49
